In the United States, Asian carp is an invasive species, i.e. not native. And when you abruptly introduce a foreign species – either plant or animal – into a existing ecosystem it usually wreaks havoc.

And the Asian carp is doing just that.

The fish is thriving in places like Kentucky and Illinois, so fishermen looking to catch catfish end up snagging more carp than catfish, which wouldn’t be a problem if it was easy to sell.

Asian carp’s reputation as a foreign invader is a turnoff to consumers.

So Kentucky State University has a brilliant – or totally idiotic – idea. Last night, Stephen Colbert reported that researchers from the university want to rename Asian carp, changing it to “Kentucky Tuna.” They hope the name change will be the public relations bump Asian carp needs.

Fishing has been great the past few weeks in Jeffreys Bay and Cape St Francis areas with not much wind. Geelbek still around with catches up to 10kg.

Well guys and gals
Winter is on its way and the action is going down.
Caught some good ones during April.
Found a great spot along the Vaal river about 3 km below the Barrage with good rapids and safe parking.
Very back to basics with 3 flushing toilets, many freah water taps and a 'donkey' shower system. Liefie and I loved it. Stayed there 3 days. Like being in the Bushveld.

Hi fellow addicts,
Was down at the Vaal river on 27 and 28 March and Liefie (my wife) son Bennie (visiting over school holidays) and me myself dropped a few flies into the river to see what would happen.
We caught quite a few yellows but I noticed damaged patches on their bodies. Open sores and scales missing testify to the weak condition of the fish. I figure this is still the result of the floods, as after the floods(previously mentioned by myself) most of the Carp I saw as well as yellows and mudfish were damaged in the same way. 
Back to the day.
Caught most on a homemade wasp pattern (two colour types) yellow and orange. Also Liefie caught a lot using an adapted PS Nymph pattern I tied, whereby a gold yarn is used to wrap the rabbit hair dubbed body/thorax and wings made of White Zebra mane hair with two or three strands of flashing. Fish grab this at a fantastic speed.

Twenty years ago I inherited a split-cane fly rod in a box with a Condex fly reel loaded with bottle green sinking line from my Father. The rod and box were falling apart but I kept the reel. I am a keen bass fisherman but I did borrow a fly rod from a friend once and tried my hand at fly fishing about 15 years ago. needless to say, I wasn't too successful casting although "roll casting" was alright, but that was as far as it went.
Recently while fishing for bass from my boat on the Vaal dam and seeing fish rising all around me, my thoughts turned to fly fishing again. I modified an old unused 7ft fibreglass rod and mounted the Condex on to it.
On February 12 this year after the Vaal dam overflowed I went down to the river with my Bass equipment and caught 4 yellowfish, one a largemouth, on Rapala. The following day I took my "fly rod" with and caught two fish on fly as well as others on the bass rods.

 Well where to start ,coming from jhb it takes about 1h30m to get there at a speed of about 160 km/h ,I didn't do that speed so it took me 2 and an half hours to get there.keeping in mind that there's always someone under the bridges on the N12 and N4 .Apart from the drive everything was great.
This was one of the best weekends i had in a long time.I took my kit and my wife to leselo bush lodge( i know the name doesn't make any sense seeing i was on the banks of the river and fishing was allowed at a bush lodge ) anyways for valentines day. We arrived the Friday afternoon at about 2pm and started unpacking. i have to say that within the first hour of our arrival i spotted a croc about 4m in length floating down the river.(that wasn't going to stop me )

Tried to do some flyfishing for yellows below the wall after the floods on 20 feb.
You just can't believe how the force of the water released from the dam, has changed the river bed with massive rocks lifted and dumped all over the place. Having fished this section of the river many years, I found I will have to learn the river bed all over again.
Water temp was cold and only caught a couple of small yellows and a carp of about 5.5 lbs on a ddd fly.

Ok, I've caught some strange things on the end of my line before, but this I've never seen before or heard of! enjoy :) Roman
