I am in the process of deciding on whether my wife and I should spend our next holiday in Cuba or Alaska.

Both locations have their particular attraction but I am unsure which will be a better destination as I am an avid angler but at 61 years of age I may need to understand the challenge a little better..

I have fished for trout for some years now in both rivers and ponds with great success.

Two years ago I moved on to "Yellow Fish" in the rivers which I really enjoy as they are very illusive and give you a good fight.

Recently hooked into a Barbel (river Catfish) by accident which gave me a torrid time but I have now decided to target this species going forward.

The only info I have is what you get from the Tour Operators who of course will encourage you to come no matter what.

I just want to share two nice catches with you all, the 1st one will be my laaitie (6"1' tall)  with mr. barbel (28.26kg) he used a 1kg carp as life bait, and boet were this a strugle to get it landed, we were norealy planning to go for any big catfish but, these junsters just wants to make a point to the old toppies, the landing nets were to small (not deep enough), lucky for us a neighbour just bought himself one of those new big carp landing nets and did this safe our fishy, it took him well over 45 minutes to get the thing landed. obviously now his PB. then a month later my boet made a killing at the same dam (Draaifontein) where he caught 47 fish with the biggest carp weighing in at 5.2kg and the smallest well we dont want to go there, but that is always fun at the water, We Stywe lyne aan almal ons gaan al weer hengel direk na werk.

In the United States, Asian carp is an invasive species, i.e. not native. And when you abruptly introduce a foreign species – either plant or animal – into a existing ecosystem it usually wreaks havoc.

And the Asian carp is doing just that.

The fish is thriving in places like Kentucky and Illinois, so fishermen looking to catch catfish end up snagging more carp than catfish, which wouldn’t be a problem if it was easy to sell.

Asian carp’s reputation as a foreign invader is a turnoff to consumers.

So Kentucky State University has a brilliant – or totally idiotic – idea. Last night, Stephen Colbert reported that researchers from the university want to rename Asian carp, changing it to “Kentucky Tuna.” They hope the name change will be the public relations bump Asian carp needs.

Fishing has been great the past few weeks in Jeffreys Bay and Cape St Francis areas with not much wind. Geelbek still around with catches up to 10kg.

Well guys and gals
Winter is on its way and the action is going down.
Caught some good ones during April.
Found a great spot along the Vaal river about 3 km below the Barrage with good rapids and safe parking.
Very back to basics with 3 flushing toilets, many freah water taps and a 'donkey' shower system. Liefie and I loved it. Stayed there 3 days. Like being in the Bushveld.

Hi fellow addicts,
Was down at the Vaal river on 27 and 28 March and Liefie (my wife) son Bennie (visiting over school holidays) and me myself dropped a few flies into the river to see what would happen.
We caught quite a few yellows but I noticed damaged patches on their bodies. Open sores and scales missing testify to the weak condition of the fish. I figure this is still the result of the floods, as after the floods(previously mentioned by myself) most of the Carp I saw as well as yellows and mudfish were damaged in the same way. 
Back to the day.
Caught most on a homemade wasp pattern (two colour types) yellow and orange. Also Liefie caught a lot using an adapted PS Nymph pattern I tied, whereby a gold yarn is used to wrap the rabbit hair dubbed body/thorax and wings made of White Zebra mane hair with two or three strands of flashing. Fish grab this at a fantastic speed.
