Trout Golden

Caught this beauty of a Goldie on a dry fly – a Bee Imitation Fly (I’ve tried to include a pic), which I bought in a lucky packet mix of flies in a store called Canadian Tire a year before when I was in Canada on a holiday. Much to my co-fishermen surprise, especial after I had to endure ridicule as to whether this particular fly would ever catch anything in its life.

The river meandering through the property creates a number of excellent and exciting fishing spots, including the feeding of five well-stocked dams containing rainbow, golden, and the elusive brown trout. The pools below the 100 metre waterfall not only challenge the connoisseur to test his skills against wild trout, but is also home to breeding colonies of the endangered Bald Ibis. For the non-angler there is hiking, bird watching, picnicking, and above all, tranquility.

All our rustic, though luxury cottages are equipped with fireplaces and braai's with ample wood supplied, what more does a couple need to experience an enjoyable, quiet and tranquil romantic evening. Though the cottages are fully equipped for self catering and serviced once a day, catering, by prior arrangement, is available.

Guests may make use of the recreation facilities. Hiking, a short 4x4 trail to waterfalls, bird watching, rod hire and fly fishing tuition is also available.

The dam is just short of a hectare in size and is kept well-stocked throughout the year. Here you will find Rainbow, Golden, Brown and the occasional very rare blue trout. The fish average about 1,5 kilograms in the dam but there are many brutes up to 4 kilograms.

This dam is well stocked but large fish will require some stealth and art to get hold of. We do allow catch and release here.

The river at Engogo is our main attraction. With over 4 km of water there is no time to fish all the runs in a three day weekend.

There are rapids, glides, shallow pools, deep pools, waterfalls and some of the best natural trout waters you will find anywhere in the world. The river has Rainbow and Brown Trout in.

Sizes vary drastically as the fish spawn naturally here and you are likely to get several feisty young fish from every pool with larger resident breeding fish going up as large as three kilograms and still growing!!!

Engogo River Side Lodge offers a full guiding service. You can have the services of a fully trained river guide for the entire duration of your stay, for novice training and/or for selected outings only.

The cost of a guide is exclusive of your accommodation, and arrangements should be made well in advance please.

Davies Trout Cottage offers comfortable accommodation in a fully equipped, self-catering cottage sleeping eight people. DSTV and situated 100 metres from the fishing waters.

Scenic hikes and day walks may be enjoyed along streams and a waterfall. Bird life is prolific.

Jan (the owner) has been stocking the Bosloopspruit for many years now and we are very anxious to see whether the "wild" trout will withstand the pressures from predators such as otters, cormorants and fish eagles. The dam is well stocked with rainbow, brown and golden trout.

Alternatively the Komati river on the farm provides excellent opportunities for the catching of the indigenous small scale and large scale yellowfish.
