Well, as far as a variety of fish species goes, lake Ontario has a lot to offer. I don't know how regular it is for Freshwater Drum to take a pesky little fly in the water but this guy really hit my fly like it was the juiciest meal he has seen in a while! When a unprecedented spring arrives early, a fisherman has little choice but to begin his epic and endless pursuit and answer the calling within to head on down to his closest watering hole. Mine just so happens to be Hamilton Waterfront Park, where I have not really had an opportunity to fish much, being new to the area. Being a very large lake with a large variety of different species I felt overwhelm and under-educated with regards to what fly one should use here. So I went with what I normally do in a situation like this and that is start with a good old fashioned imitator of most things that a predator would eat, yes the Wooly Bugger…
After about a hour, with no interest being shown at all in this well known wholesome meal I was dishing out, I decided to try something a little different, which was really a “Think Big or Go Home” kind of attitude and brought out a medium sized Pink Clouse Minnow, the concept I told myself was that maybe these fish want a popper meal after a long frozen winter spell. After about 10 minutes of testing the fly at different depths, starting form top to the deepest, I had just started bringing the fly up from the deep drop-off in front of me and that when this guy hit it!
